Imbued membrane bioreactor (MBR) is an organic combination of membrane separation technology and biotechnology. Using ultrafiltration or microfiltration membrane separation technology to replace the traditional activated sludge method with two sinks and conventional filtration units, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the mud age (STR) are completely separated. Its highly efficient solid-liquid separation ability make the water quality good, suspended solids and turbidity was close to zero, and can intercept biological pollutants such as e. coli, treated effluent can be directly reuse, effluent is significantly better than traditional sewage treatment technology, is a kind of wastewater reuse technology of high efficiency and low cost. 

Classification of ultrafiltration membrane:

MBR is a new kind of sewage treatment device which combines the separation of ultrafiltration membrane and the bioreactor in wastewater treatment.

This reactor combines the advantages of membrane treatment technology and biotreatment technology.

The ultrafiltration membrane component as a mud water separation unit can completely replace the secondary sedimentation tank.

In the late 1970s, the study of membrane bioreactor (MBR) in Japan was progressing rapidly due to the need of wastewater recycling.

From 1983 to 1987, 13 companies in Japan used the aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) to treat the sewage in the building, treating water as a medium water 


From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, Zenon continued dorr-oliver's early research to develop a system for treating industrial wastewater that was successful.

Zenon's commercial product, ZenoGem, was put into use in 1982.

China's research on immersion membrane bioreactor (MBR) began in the early 1990s.

The first study included tsinghua university, cas ecology center, tianjin university, tongji university, etc.

In recent years, due to the great attraction and potential application prospect of this technology, more researchers have preferred.

1. Characteristics of membrane bioreactor:

1) high efficiency and direct return of water.

Due to the efficient separation of the hollow fiber membrane to the mixing liquid of the biochemical reactor, the sludge can be separated from the water, so the SS and turbidity of the water can be close to zero.

At the same time, the loss of activated sludge is almost zero, so the concentration of activated sludge in the biochemical reactor is about 2 ~ 6 times higher than the traditional process, which greatly improves the denitrification ability.

2) the system has stable operation, simple process, little equipment and small footprint.

Because of the high concentration of activated sludge in MBR technology, the volume load of the device is large.

The shock resistance of water inlet is good and stable.

In addition to this process can greatly reduce the biochemical reactor, the volume of aeration tank, the equipment and structures miniaturization, can even save the early pond, also do not need the second pond, makes the system covers an area of less.

3) the sludge age is long and the residual sludge is small.

When the sludge concentration is high and the water inlet load is low, the nutrition and microbial ratio (F/M) in the system is low, and the sludge age becomes longer.

When F/M maintains a low value, the growth of activated sludge is close to zero, which reduces the processing cost for the remaining sludge.

4) convenient operation management and easy to realize automatic control.

Due to the membrane separation can make active sludge completely trapped in the bioreactor, the bioreactor in hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT) is completely separated, can be controlled flexible and steady;
